About Us

As a registered non-profit organization, the ClearScience Challenge brings together Scientific Concepts and Public Speaking, nurturing the next generation of effective communicators in Science.

The ClearScience Challenge is a one-day high school event held in Calgary, Alberta. We welcome aspiring scientists from all over the world in hopes to develop public speaking and research skills.

The Challenge is a remarkable opportunity for students to discuss current events happening in the scientific community to a large audience. Student's are tasked to research for up to a month on a specific issue concerning the world, developing specific solutions, and presenting it to an array of experienced professionals.

At the Challenge, students must learn how to develop their public speaking skills to explain conceptually difficult ideas efficiently and precisely. Through discussing and debating with peers, we hope to prepare students with an important life skill necessary for science: communication.

Our Story

The founders of the ClearScience were posed a major challenge in their first year of high school

In their first high school science class, Nathan and Sumedh struggled to understand complex scientific topics. Nathan initially found it challenging to comprehend the stages of photosynthesis. He asked poorly worded questions that did not clarify his understanding. In Physics, Sumedh struggled to clearly express his thoughts during the Kinematics unit, often resorting to filler words such as "like" and "um."

They believed that to achieve mastery in scientific topics, students required not just a deep understanding of the material, but also expertise in communicating questions and ideas with precision and confidence.

Seeing this, the ClearScience Challenge was born. This event was created to assist students in overcoming similar challenges faced by our founders, by providing an environment in which they could hone their public speaking skills, and clearly articulate complex ideas in science while receiving feedback from renowned professionals. Nathan and Sumedh's vision was to provide aspiring scientists with the tools they needed to succeed, with an emphasis on clear communication.
